Over the past few years, OTT platforms have become the premier destination for original storytelling. Picture Factory partnered with Hotstar to produce two distinct series—HouseHusband and Afterlife. Both projects showcase our ability to adapt the dark cinematic language to serialized content.
Understanding the Audience
HouseHusband targets urban millennials with a blend of humor and domestic drama, while Afterlife dives into supernatural thriller territory for a more niche, genre‑savvy audience. Early audience research helped us decide on tonal direction: a warm teal‑gold contrast for the former, and a colder, deeper palette for the latter.
Pre‑Production Challenges
Each series demanded unique set designs. For HouseHusband, we transformed a Mumbai apartment into a lived‑in space using practical lighting that felt natural yet cinematic. Afterlife required building an otherworldly set with layered fog, low‑key lighting and reflective surfaces to convey a liminal environment.
Production Highlights
- Camera: ARRI Alexa Mini for its dynamic range, enabling rich shadows.
- Lenses: Fast primes (1.8 aperture) for shallow depth of field, enhancing intimacy.
- Lighting: A blend of practicals and LED panels for quick setups, keeping the darkness consistent across episodes.
Post‑Production Techniques
Our colour grading team applied custom LUTs—teal for HouseHusband to evoke optimism, and deep teal‑blue for Afterlife to heighten suspense. Sound design played a pivotal role; layered ambient tracks for Afterlife created an unsettling atmosphere, while a light acoustic score underscored HouseHusband’s domestic scenes.
Results and Impact
Both series entered Hotstar’s top‑10 within the first two weeks of release. HouseHusband saw a 28% increase in binge‑watch rates, and Afterlife achieved a 15% higher completion rate than the platform’s average thriller series. The visual identity contributed heavily to audience retention.
These projects underscore how a well‑crafted visual language—rooted in darkness, yet illuminated by strategic accent colors—can elevate OTT storytelling and drive measurable success.
